In order to help children succeed, we feel it is important to support those individuals and agencies who have the most interest and investment in children, and who also have the strongest impact on children, namely child care providers and parents.
In partnership with local agencies and organizations serving providers and families, we have developed the following programs:
The Success By 6 Standards for Quality Child Care is designed as a guide for early learning centers, preschools, family day programs, and other day care sites. The goal is to help these sites create an environment conducive to child development, with a focus on language development and social skills. A committee of child care providers, teachers, social service providers, and United Way staff developed the standards. The standards are designed to guide and support local child care providers, and are intended to enhance, not replace, state licensure requirements.
In order to improve parents’ access to resources, we are in the process of designing and equipping a bus to serve as a traveling parent resource center. Parents throughout Central Virginia will have access to these resources. We specifically hope to fill the need for parents of children on waiting lists for local programs (i.e., pre-k programs at local schools). The Child Care Resource Center will provide a place for parents to ask questions and receive written information on socialization and language skills for children 0-6. Videos and computer software will be available for parents and children to use.
